This season, Meningioma Mommas is pitching in for critical research for more effective treatments and, ultimately, a cure for meningiomas.
Meningiomas are the most common primary brain tumor, yet they are often mistakenly labeled as ‘benign.’ While many grow slowly, they can still cause debilitating symptoms, require multiple surgeries, radiation, chemotherapy, and significantly impact quality of life.
Tragically, a subset of meningiomas are aggressive and lack effective treatment options. This reality is deeply personal for us; we know firsthand, having lost one too many second family members to this disease.
Our own Fearless Fighter, Livi, is preparing for chemotherapy to treat multiple meningiomas in her brain and on her spine. She has already endured 13 craniotomies for multiple meningiomas.
Her mother, Jenny, shares:
“My daughter Livi, the Fearless Fighter, is a multi-meningioma mass kicker and the toughest one on the block. Diagnosed with her first tumor at 5, with spontaneous NF (types 1 and 2, and genetically tested positive) she currently has had 13 craniotomies at 27 years old. She still has multiple brain and spinal meningiomas. After three surgeries in 2024, she will start chemotherapy to shrink or stabilize these tumors that have taken her hearing, facial muscles, maturity, and balance. Her neurosurgeon told us to do anything we want with her now, so we love her hard while we can. Livi may have multiple meningiomas, but as you can see they don’t have her.”
Accounting for roughly 37% of all primary brain tumors, it’s disheartening that meningioma research funding lags substantially. It’s like our team is playing with fewer resources while facing a formidable opponent.
